Mahashivratri, ‘The Night of Lord Shiva’ is celebrated by all the devotees as gratitude to the three eyed God Lord Shiva. As the legend goes Lord Shiva protected the universe by drinking poison. The poison was so potent that the Lord drank it but did not swallow it. He held the poison in his throat that turned his throat blue. Thus Lord Shiva is also known by another name ‘Neelkanth’.
